The Moral Decay of the News

Journalists used to be champions of the average citizen; now all they seem to want is to frighten them so they wont turn off their T.V. The news used to be about digging through the corruption and lies to objectively bring the truth out. Now, in an ultimate case of irony they take the truth and embellish it and dilute it with biases. This is unfortunate because people trust the news. They expect the news to provide them with real stories that are not politically skewed to improve the image of a certain politician or political party. W. James Potter outlines a way where the news is sometimes biased on accident, by only giving the partial story. He writes that Even though the journalists are not trying to mislead the audience, people exposed to a partial story are still shown a distorted picture of the occurrence, and therefore cannot be regarded as being objective (p.183). This shows just how much influence the media has and stresses the importance of how careful they must be when presenting a story. But with regards to the source of intentional bias in the news, sometimes even blatant racism can be traced back to the greed of corporate America, both for money and for pushing their own political agendas. Bernard Goldberg was a CBS insider who wrote a book exposing the news media for what it really was, and that book was called Bias. In one part of the book he writes, the news Moguls dont want too many black characters in stories on 48 hours or Dateline or 20/20 [because] white audiences want to see characters who look like they do(p.161). The news media behind the cameras can be a very ugly and corrupt place. Unfortunately for us Americans, the corruption of media does not rest solely on the shoulders of the news channel executives and their anchors; it is as much our fault as it is theirs. People today turn on their television to be entertained, and the news was not keeping up with the increasing number of channels to choose from, which prov ided people with non-stop action, comedy and all kinds of entertainment. It became harder for people to be wowed by boring news, so the news had to step up their game if they wanted to pull in mass audiences all the time. And there is one story that gets all the news channel executives salivating; war.

War, just the sound of the word is exciting. When the United States invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, there was not a person I knew that wasnt glued to their television. The images of bombs slamming into buildings in the middle of the night and tanks blazing over sand dunes played nonstop. Like when most countries go to war the country came together to watch the events unfold. However, this war was not like wars in the past. When one would watch it on the news it seemed almost surreal, like it was just another show on television: There would be ten to fifteen minutes of news, then five minutes of the same commercials found on every other station. It took away from the seriousness and significance of the situation, and it seemed more like a T.V. show for entertainment purposes than an event that needs to be taken extremely seriously. In many ways they news was the primary influencer in invading Iraq. First the politicians used fear to substantiate a need to invade, and the news passed that fear along to the masses, they did not report on the cause for war objectively.

As America becomes more and more media oriented, it is important for the users of the media to be able to analyze the information that they are receiving. Not everything that is spoon-fed to the public by the news is always pure. Power always corrupts and the news networks have a lot of it.

Sakshi Telugu News Paper - Sakshi Family for Kids, Day to Day Specials Part 4

Part 4 of Sakshi telugu news paper daily specials. Sakshi Family is the most interesting part of the Sakshi telugu news paper that makes this paper unique. It has interesting sections of which the last four pages are more entertaining.

This covers the last part of this series, Sakshi Family. For common sections go to part 1, for business section go to part 3 and for the first half of Sakshi Family go to part 2.

Sakshi Family sections last four pages start again after this. This time the glamour section is repeated again at fifth page (Cinema) with information only on telugu movies, schedules, releases etc.

The sixth page called Vendi Thera contains information about movie shows, theatres and timings in that particular city or near by towns, then all the TV shows and timings information with first one as Sakshi TV which is the TV part owned by the head of the Sakshi news paper. This is much like the Eenadu news paper does though that features detailed coverage on Eenadu Television shows.

The seventh page is called Vidya, education related section with tips, news, sample model papers etc. on competitive exams and general studies. It is also common on all days.

The last page of Family section is most interesting but it is mainly for kids called as Kids Special section. This contains a short story, Mother Earth, Mother Told, Tell Daddy, Crossword for Telugu to English words, Cartoon story, a drawable or colorable picture, English Proverbs explain in Telugu often with similar meaning Telugu proverbs, A 6x6 version of their own Sudoku, and a visual test to detect five differences in two similar images.

With this the complete coverage on day to day specials ends. Sakshi telugu news paper is a unique kind of paper because of not just the news and information that is published everyday but also the periodic nature of variety sections and the way the news is organized page after page with paragraph after paragraph, block after block and image after image, everything placed with a well planned outline to make it a special paper that stands out ahead of competition.

There is one interesting thing that I had noticed with this paper. You can take the Sakshi news paper and pull out any section, then find that it does not disturb the continuity of any section. Because the paper places some parts of the same section on different pages of the paper so that they are on the four sides of the same paper because the sixteen page main paper contains four front to back pages.

You can see this with State level news, Sakshi Local News, National news, Business, Cinema section, etc. This makes handling the paper very easy!

Using Two of the Features of Google: Google Maps and Google News

Both Google Maps and Google News are found at the top of the Google home. They are blue links.

Google Maps is the map search feature of Google. Usually, the Google Maps information is fairly accurate, but sometimes it presents inaccurate information. Since users can obtain textual directions and a road map, it is best to have both the textual directions and the road map. That way, if there is an error or something is unclear on one map, the other source can be used. It doesnt usually hurt to consult the satellite map as well.

Users can add a map to their own site with Google Maps. Its called the Map Content Partner Program. If interested in the Map Content Partner Program, consult the Google Maps site; certain terms and conditions apply. There is also a help forum for Google Maps.

Google News is a search index for news. Whether Google News is an improvement over the Orwellian days of broadcast and cable TV is debatable, but it seems to be, at least while there are other search engines that offer news features. The sea of blogs on the web offer a variety of opinion. Many facts not available in the mainstream press can be found in blogs or websites that are off the beaten path.

Some of the news services that are represented on Google News are BBC, Reuters, the Associated Press, Bloomberg, Fox News, CNN, and many newspapers such as the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times. Google News returns results from more obscure news sources as well, such as the Chippewa Herald, Politico, the AFP, Aljazeera.net, and dBTechno.

Google News has Top Stories, World, U.S. and Business News, as well as Science/Technology News, Entertainment News, Sports News, Health News, Spotlight News, and Most Popular News.

For the Orwellian inclined, YouTube News has video news.

How to break news of cancer to others

However bad and terrible any news or situation may be, it certainly would have to be revealed to those who are directly affected by that situation. The mode and process of breaking such news would often to a great extent determine how well the news is received by those concerned and how they adjust to the events thereafter. Cancer is a predatory, gruesome and deadly disease which by all means is bad news for the person diagnosed with the disease as well as friends and family of the person. Breaking such terrible news about oneself or about another person requires a lot of mental and emotional preparation and comportment for the person breaking the news as well as the recipients of the news. This is for the simple reason that if such devastating news is not properly managed and appropriately delivered, it could create additional psychological problems for those affected by the situation.

The ability to communicate clearly and honestly is very important in breaking such news. It would therefore be important to assemble and articulate all material information on the particular type of cancer the individual is diagnosed with, the prognosis as revealed by medical tests and examinations carried out, as well as discussions with relevant healthcare practitioners. The availability of such information puts the person in good position to be able to anticipate and answer questions that may come up upon breaking the news. This would imply that the person breaking the news takes necessary self preparation measures that would equip him or her to effectively communicate with those concerned without leaving gaps or creating confusion in the minds of the recipients of the news.

The next step would be to make a decision on whom to first break the news to. This is important because the first person or group of persons to receive the news should be expectedly play active roles in managing and bearing the burden of the illness during the period of treatment. It would therefore be necessary to put into consideration, how significant and close such people are to the person. It would be more reasonable that such news be first broken to a spouse in the case of a married couple and then the couple will jointly break the news to the children. This gives the couple the benefit of adequately grasping and processing the reality of the situation and deciding when and how best to break the news to the children, other family members and perhaps friends.

Timing is of critical essence in matters of this nature. It is always important and advisable to ensure that the atmosphere is conducive and the people in the right mood and frame of mind before introducing such an emotionally sensitive topic. A quiet and private atmosphere, possibly early in the morning or late in the evening may be ideal. This serves to eliminate or considerably reduce any form of distractions or interruptions during the discussion and therefore give room for maximum concentration.

It would also be necessary to be cautious in starting out the discussion. This would imply, carefully and wisely choosing the right words and expressions to use. This creates the enabling environment for the news to sink in while ensuring that those receiving it are not sent into prolonged shock. There certainly will be shock at hearing such terrible news about a loved one, but the topic should be introduced in such a manner that enables them to quickly recover from the initial shock and be able to focus on the matter and make meaningful contributions to the discussion.

Most importantly, it is necessary to take charge of the situation, by conveying an image of confidence and courage to those around. While not advocating for creation of false hopes, it is advisable to highlight the positives about the situation while ensuring that the negatives are not exaggerated. Expressing confidence in the midst of such a grim situation has a way of infusing hope and courage in people around and consequently helps every body develop positive attitudes and good coping skills which will prove valuable in the days ahead in dealing with the challenges that will be faced while receiving treatment for the ailment.

How to make Google news display custom news stories on its front page

The Google news website works by aggregating and displaying news stories from other major news sites such as BBC News, CNN, Reuters and PC World. Visit the Google News home page and you will see headlining news stories under several categories; business, world news, health, sports and so on. Excerpts are given for each story and a link to the full article wherever that may be (CNN, BBC etc). You can with a little tweaking make Google news do your bidding and display news stories on its front page that suit your interests.

In the Google news home page on the top right hand side there is a link reading Personalize this Page. Clicking on it will give you a drop down pane with a host of customization options. You can rearrange where the default categories are displayed on the page (e.g. place health news at the top of the page) and add new news categories that fit your taste. Clicking on Local selection lets you type in a city or state and Google will bring you news from that region under a new category heading. Click on custom selection and you can choose to view news that fits any keyword (volcanoes, dolphins, cat balding etc.) you type in.

This is a great way to keep up to date with very specific topics of your choice and bypasses the longer route of typing in keywords into the Google news search engine to view specific topic news articles. Test out a few different keywords to fine tune the results Google comes up with. Your custom news stories will appear in a new section in the page and you can choose to view more stories by clicking on Show more stories at the bottom of each section.

Later, if you get tired of reading news stories about a certain subject you can choose to delete the category.

Ten Reasons to Sell Your Information Technology Company - Business

For the past 20 years you have built your information technology business. Your company has become part of your identity. Even when you are not at work, you are working, thinking, planning. You never stop. If you sell you are leaving behind much more than a job. In this article we will discuss some reasons that might indicate that it is time to sell your information technology company.

1. Late in your working life you are faced with a major system re-write, sales force expansion or capital requirement in order for your company to maintain its competitive position.

2. A large competitor is taking market share away from you at an accelerating pace.

3. Your legacy system or competitive advantage has been "leap frogged" by a smaller, nimble, entrepreneurial firm.

4. A major company just acquired a direct competitor and will be aggressively growing the business.

5. Your fire to compete at your top level is not burning as brightly as it once did.

6. Your kids are not interested or are not capable of running the business.

7. You have had a health scare and have decided to smell the flowers.

8. You have lost a major client of a key employee.

9. The market is hot and you decide to take some chips off the table for asset diversification.

10. You exit in an orderly fashion and from a position of strength as you intended.

Lets look at these in a little more detail.

Major capital investment, system upgrade or sales force expansion required - You are supposed to be diversifying your assets, not concentrating them even further. Think about a simple payback analysis. Does that extend beyond your retirement date? You want to be able to defend that investment with the energy and intensity you devoted when you were originally growing your business. Maybe it is time to bring in an equity partner with smart money, an industry buyer with the management depth, infrastructure, or distribution network to protect that investment. You might consider selling now with a three-year employment contract. Let the new owner fund the required capital investment and defend that investment with his larger capital base.

A Large Competitor is Taking Market Share Away from You - Believe me, the news is not going to get better. As an investor you would probably sell the stock in a company you owned if Microsoft or GE decided to assume a presence in that market. Business owners often struggle with objectivity when a similar event takes place in their own company's industry.

Your Legacy Systems have been "Leap Frogged" by a Nimble Entrepreneurial Firm - This happens all the time and can cause an erosion of your customer base. Your inertia will sustain you for a while, but eventually you will begin to experience customer defections. You can either rewrite, acquire or sell. If you decide to sell, do so before losing too many clients.

A giant company in your industry just acquired one of your major competitors. Watch out, they did not make this acquisition to maintain status quo. They want to grow their market share. They will be coming after your clients. The good news is that as a defensive measure, one or more of their competitors will be compelled to make a similar acquisition. It is best to be aggressively ahead of the curve and get acquired while the market is hot and prices are being bid upwards.

Your interest and competitive fire is eroding. Let's face it, if you are not growing, you most likely are contracting. Your competition was tough when you were on your game. Your family's net worth is under attack if you are no longer fully committed.

Your original plan was to turn your business over to your children. They may not be interested or capable of competing at this level. Perhaps the greatest legacy you can leave to your kids is to convert your company into a diversified portfolio of financial assets that are far less risky than turning complex company in a highly competitive industry over to inexperienced managers.

You have a health scare and all of a sudden you start thinking of all the sacrifices you made and all the things you want to do before it is too late. Your list of goals is immediately changed from financial in nature to family, friends, travel, experiences, philanthropy, etc. You might want to listen to your heart this time.

You have lost a major client or a key employee. That can be a real blow to a business. The owner, by nature, is optimistic and believes that the lost business will soon be replaced and does not ratchet down the expense level to match this new sales level. If he does cut, inevitably, it is not fast enough and not deep enough. Maybe it is time to seek a buyer that could replace that business before your company's value is severely impaired as your profits erode.

The market is hot and you decide to take some chips off the table for diversification. You may be thinking of retiring in four years, but a consolidation is occurring in your industry and valuations are up 20%. Sell at the top and sign a four-year employment or consulting contract. The odds are that if you exit on your original schedule, valuations will have settled back down to the norm.

You ring the bell and exit on your own terms, from a position of strength, exactly like you planned. You are well aware of the competitive forces in the market and the relative strength or weakness in valuation multiples. You have prepared your business to be attractive to a strategic buyer. Everything is going your way. You hire a good M&A advisory firm to present you confidentially to the most likely buyers. Several recognize your value and show interest. You are able to get a little competitive bidding going. Your transaction value rises and your terms improve. You pull the trigger and complete the sale. Mission Accomplished.
