Fisher Scam Prevention News : Leaked HP Memo Tackles TouchPad Shortcomings - Business - Management

Fisher Capital Management Scam Prevention News : Leaked HP Memo Tackles TouchPad Shortcomings

Hewlett-Packard is taking mixed reviews for its new TouchPad tablet with webOS pretty seriously, going by a leaked internal memo from the head ofHP's Palm Global Business Unit to staff that declares it will be "a marathon not a sprint" to fix the initial shortcomings of the device.John Rubenstein, senior vice president and general manager of HP's Palm unit, sent the memo on July 1, the day the TouchPad was officially released in the U.S. It was apparently leaked by an anonymous tipster to Pre Central, a specialist tech website covering HP's mobile business. While the memo cites The New York Times reviewer David Pogue's opinion that the TouchPad shows "signs of greatness," Rubenstein also concedes that Pogue and other "reviewers rightly note things we need to improve about the webOS experience."That's a tacit admission that the TouchPad has a long way to go in areas like app availability and user friendliness before it lives up to one HP executive's pre-release boast that th e tablet would take onApple's market-dominating iPad and "become better than number one."PCMag's Lead Analyst for Audio and Video Timothy Gideon didn't disagree with Rubenstein's assessment (reprinted below), offering up the "general feeling that the good outweighs the bad with the TouchPad." Our full review of the tablet offers much the same sentiment.Meanwhile, Hewlett-Packard is planning to follow up on its Wi-Fi-only, 16GB and 32GB TouchPads with a "white glossy" model due out in August that sports a more powerful processor and 64GB of internal storage, as well as a 32GB TouchPad with support for AT&T's 4G HSPA+ network in the same August timeframe, according to leaked HP product roadmap slides, also published this week by Pre Central. Here's the leaked internal email:"Team,"Today we bring the HP TouchPad and webOS 3.0 to the world. The HP team has achieved something extraordinary--especially when you consider that it's been just one year since our work on the TouchPad be gan in earnest. Today also marks the start of a new era for HP as our vision for connected mobility begins to take form--an ecosystem of services, applications and devices connected seamlessly by webOS."If you've seen the recent TouchPad reviews you know that the industry understands HP's vision and sees the same potential in webOS as we do. David Pogue from The New York Times says, "[T]here are signs of greatness here." ... You've also seen that reviewers rightly note things we need to improve about the webOS experience. The good news is that most of the issues they cite are already known to us and will be addressed in short order by over-the-air software and app catalog updates. We still have work to do to make webOS the platform we know it can be, but remember--it's a marathon, not a sprint."In that spirit, Richard Kerris, head of worldwide developer relations for webOS, reminded me yesterday of the first reviews for a product introduced a little over ten years ago:"...ov erall the software is sluggish""...there are no quality apps to use, so it won't last""...it's just not making sense...""It's hard to believe these statements described MacOS X--a platform that would go on to change the landscape of Silicon Valley in ways that no one could have imagined."The similarities to our situation are obvious, but there's also a big difference. Like David Pogue, our audiences get that webOS has the potential for greatness. And like me, they know that your hard work and passion, and the power of HP's commitment to webOS, will turn that potential into the real thing."

Fisher Capital Management Latest News: Bank deposits rise 3.2 pct in H1 - Business - Management

Fisher Capital Management Latest News: Bank deposits rise 3.2 pct in H1

SEOUL, July 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean banks' deposits increased 3.2 percent in the first half as the economic recovery and higher deposit rates lured customers into relatively safe assets, industry data showed Tuesday.

Deposits held by local six banks including top lender Kookmin Bank amounted to 810.5 trillion won (US$761 billion) as of end-June, up 24.8 trillion won from the end of last year, according to the data.

Five major banks saw their deposits rise in the first half, but deposits at Korea Exchange Bank (KEB), controlled by U.S. buyout fund Lone Star Funds, declined in the cited period, spawning market concerns that its capacity to do business may be dented.

Deposits at KEB, South Korea's No. 5 lender, reached 67.5 trillion won as of the end of last month, down 1.8 trillion won from six months earlier. Compared with a year ago, its deposits fell by 1.97 trillion won, data showed.

The data came as the protracted sale of KEB and Lone Star's receipt of a record interim dividend are raising uncertainty surrounding the bank's business.

Hana Financial Group Inc. agreed on Friday to extend a deal to buy KEB within six months at a lower price of 4.41 trillion won amid the regulator's delay in its review of Lone Star's eligibility as the top shareholder of KEB.

KEB's decision to pay out a quarterly dividend caused Lone Star to rake in dividends worth 496.9 billion won. The decision invited public criticism that the fund is trying to exit the Korean market after fattening its pockets.

But an official at KEB said that the decline in deposits mainly resulted from seasonal factors, not from a customer exodus, adding that given the size of its assets, the volume of deposits and loans remained at an appropriate level.

KEB's total assets stood at 106.2 trillion won at the end of March, up 6.8 percent from three months earlier. KEB's market share in foreign exchange markets accounted for 47.5 percent as of end-May, up from 43.5 percent the previous month.

Fisher Capital Management News: China Ramps Up Military Use of Space With New Satellites-Report - Finance

(Reuters) - China is developing cutting-edge satellites that will allow it to project power far beyond its shores and deter the United States from using aircraft carriers in any future conflict over its rival Taiwan, a report said. The piece in next months Journal of Strategic Studies, a U.K.-published defence and security journal, runs at odds with Chinas stated opposition to the militarization of space. But the report, an advance copy of which was obtained by Reuters, said that the rapid development of advanced reconnaissance satellites to enable China to track hostile forces in real time and guide ballistic missiles has become a key to the modernization of its forces. While the United States used to be unrivaled in this area, China is catching up fast, it added.Chinas constellation of satellites is transitioning from the limited ability to collect general strategic information, into a new era in which it will be able to support tactical operations as they happen, the repor t said.China may already be able to match the United States ability to image a known, stationary target and will likely surpass it in the flurry of launches planned for the next two years.Beijing has consistently denied it has anything other than peaceful plans for space and says its growing military spending and prowess are for defensive purposes and modernization of outdated forces. But with the recent unveiling of a stealth fighter, the expected launch of its first aircraft carriers and more aggressive posture over territorial disputes such as one in the South China Sea, Beijing has rattled nerves regionally and globally.Chinas space program has come a long way since late leader Mao Zedong, who founded Communist China in 1949, lamented that the country could not even launch a potato into space.Since then, it has launched men into orbit and brought them home, sent out its first lunar probe and begun longer-term programmes to explore Mars and establish a space station. The su ccessful missile kill of an old satellite in early 2007 represented a new level of ability for the Chinese military, and last year China successfully tested emerging technology aimed at destroying missiles in mid-air.U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned earlier this year that advances by Chinas military in cyber and anti-satellite warfare technology could challenge the ability of U.S. forces to operate in the Pacific.STRATEGICALLY DISQUIETINGChinas need to use satellites to up its military game became apparent during the 1995-96 Taiwan Straits crisis, when the U.S. dispatched a carrier group after China menaced the self-ruled island with war games, the report said.Beijing realized it could neither track nor respond to the U.S. ships. The incident also led China to realize it needed the means to keep Washington from using its navy to intervene in a war over Taiwan. Beijing regards the island as a rebel province. The most immediate and strategically disquieting applicatio n (of reconnaissance satellites) is a targeting and tracking capability in support of the anti-ship ballistic missile, which could hit U.S. carrier groups, the report said. But Chinas growing capability in space is not designed to support any single weapon; instead it is being developed as a dynamic system, applicable to other long-range platforms. With space as the backbone, China will be able to expand the range of its ability to apply force while preserving its policy of not establishing foreign military bases.More broadly speaking, satellites will be able to help China project power. As Chinas capabilities grow, with space reconnaissance as an example, it will be increasingly hard to reconcile the rhetoric of a defensive posture and a more expansive capability. Shaw Capital Management News:Japan Wins 1st World Cup Title In Penalty Shootout - Finance

FRANKFURT, Germany -- They came to play for their earthquake and tsunami-ravaged country. They left with the Women's World Cup trophy, holding it high above their smiling faces, flecked with gold confetti.Japan stunned the Americans in a riveting final, beating the favorites 3-1 in a penalty shootout Sunday after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 draw. Goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori made two brilliant saves in the shootout."Before we went to the match tonight we had some commentary on television and we heard comments on the situation in Japan," coach Norio Sasaki said. "We wanted to use this opportunity to thank the people back home for the support that has been given."This was Japan's first appearance in the final of a major tournament, and they had not beaten the Americans in their previous 25 meetings, including a pair of 2-0 losses in warm-up matches a month before the World Cup. But the Nadeshiko pushed ahead, playing inspired football and hoping their success could provide even a small emotional lift to their nation, still reeling from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northern coast of the country and left nearly 23,000 dead or missing. After each game, the team unfurled a banner saying, "To our Friends Around the World -- Thank You for Your Support." On Sunday, they did it before the match and afterward they had a new sign to display: Champions -- and the first Asian country to win this title. The Americans found it all too hard to grasp. They believed they were meant to be World Cup champions after their rocky year -- needing a playoff to qualify, a loss in group play to Sweden, the epic comeback against Brazil. They simply couldn't pull off one last thriller."The players were patient, they wanted to win this game," Sasaki said. "I think it's because of that the Americans scored only two goals.""We ran and ran," captain Homare Sawa said. "We were exhausted, but we kept running.""This is a team effort," Kaihori said. "In the penalty shootout I just had to believe in myself and I was very confident."Copyright 2011 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. FCM World News: Fake 'Harry Potter' news causes Facebook freakout - Business

By Suzanne ChoneyPeople put all kinds of news on Facebook -- personal news, real news and then there's The Onion news (which is totally fake and fun). But not everyone gets that The Onion is a spoof, and with Facebook's water-cooler factor, "bad news" can spread fast and upset the masses, especially when it's about a well-known boy wizard by the name of "Harry Potter."When an Onion posting about the "Final Minutes of Last Harry Potter Movie To Be Split Into Seven Separate Films" hit the social networking site, some took the joke to heart, protesting mightily on Facebook. That's where a new website, "Literally Unbelievable" stepped in to help sort the out the Wizards from the Muggles, so to speak, and bring the truth to the fore. Hudson Hongo, a 24-year-old writer, started the site May 20 specifically to showcase "stories from The Onion as interpreted by Facebook." The impetus was an Onion story about Planned Parenthood opening an "abortionplex," which engendered heated and unprintable responses on Facebook, as did the Potter send-up."I found the sheer number of people reading Onion articles sincerely (across the political spectrum) a surprise," he told Mashable recently. "I wasn't sure whether it was crueler to share these remarkable texts publicly or to keep them to myself. Then I got bored and just did it."Some Potter fans were certainly taken in by The Onion report shared on Facebook."In response to The Onion story about the Harry Potter movie, for instance, one woman posted, 'it sounds legitit came straight from warner brosclick on the link and watch the video it tells you how they'll do it.' " Mashable noted.Being in the real news biz, we appreciate The Onion for what it does to provide some levity, if not truth. And we only wish this part of its Harry Potter report were true:"Producers of the new Cameron Diaz film, 'Bad Teacher,' have decided to split that movie into zero parts and never release it."
