Current News and the Internet - News - Current Affairs

Times have changed and with it has changed news. And needless to say, news if not served piping hot is of no use. Some even that happened yesterday has lost its value today; such is the reach of news mediums in today's age.The ways through which one can keep abreast with current news has increased manifold. Once news was spread only through word-of-mouth the n later on came the newspapers followed by TV and its hot avatar live TV. The next big revolution came with the advent of the internet. Now it's is a matter of seconds before a news breaks on the World Wide Web. This medium has a very strong advantage as it is not bound by time or region constraints. Just a web connection and a suitable device can ensure that one is connected to the happenings from around the world in a matter of few clicks. And the most important innovation which has come to the fore by the rapid increase in acceptance of the Web as a credible source of news is that news websites have evolved into hybr id mediums where there textual news, videos, audio clippings, pictures etc. But what makes it truly revolutionary is that current news served through the web is participatory in nature. The reader/viewer can not just read or watch news, he/she is also bestowed with the power to comment/ like/vote their favourite stories. This participatory advantage of the web is the essence of its advantage vis--vis other mediums. While the TV news industry has also risen to the challenge and goad people to participate in the news by way of posting on Facebeook or Twitter, but then that too falls under the purview of what necessarily is the Web. Current news has surely got a whole new meaning and relevance courtesy the advent of the internet age. Take for example the recent announcement of the capture and killing of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The news was flashed all across the world within seconds of it being confirmed by the Libyan Transition Council. Had been an event in the 70s o r 80s or even 90s, the news would have got flashed in India latest by the 9 pm news on the state run Doordarshan. Now everything is instant, everything is current but this race for being the first has made current news lose its relevance as what is current at this moment is stale in one hour. But still, the importance and the advantage of the new mediums is something that is on the rise and will be a critical factor in deciding the profitability of a news organisation in the days to come.
