Today Al-jazeera News network has become more like the BBC in its coverage, and it is for viewers to decide if this is what they want from it. It has 40 million or so viewers in the Arab world, so it must be doing something right.

This year's WWDC was about software, not hardware, with Apple focussing on iOS and Mac OS

A new report from China later stated that Q3 (which still includes July) is now the earliest we will see the iPhone 5, after the disaster in Japan pushed back supply of key components.

On 20 April 2011, it emerged that the iPhone 5 release date may be September 2011 rather than June/July. This date was cited by three sources who spoke to Reuters. As iOS 5 is set to be out in the Autumn, it's a safe bet that the iPhone 5 will make its debut sometime then.

On 17 May, we reported that Phones4U outed the iPhone 5 release date as 21 November 2011. We're not sure how Phones4U would know the release date at this stage, though, so take this particular snippet of information with a pinch of salt.

The iPhone 5 will debut alongside iOS 5 in the Autumn

iOS 5 will ship in the Autumn, says Apple. Could this coincide with the iPhone 5?

iPhone 5 form factor

The Wall Street Journal reported that: "Apple is also developing a new iPhone model, said people briefed on the phone. One person familiar said the fifth-generation iPhone would be a different form factor than those that are currently available. it was unclear how soon that version would be available to Verizon or other carriers."

This has since been backed up by reports from Engadget, which state the design will be a 'total rethink'.

Of course, since the iPhone 3G was followed by the 3GS it's possible the new iPhone won't be a total refresh and we'll see an iPhone 4S (or iPhone 4GS) before an iPhone 5.

An iPhone 4S looked more likely on 16 May 2011 after analyst Peter Misek wrote: "According to our industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support."

However, earlier reports from China backed up the larger-screened, metal chassis-sporting iPhone 5 rumours, so the redesign still seems firmly on the cards.

On 22 March 2011, China Times also reported that the iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch display.

A rumour we covered on 7 March 2011 suggests that the new iPhone will do away with the glass back and opt instead for a metal back which will act as a new iPhone antenna.

And an Apple patent that we reported on on 7 April 2011 suggests that we could see the bezel put to good use on the new iPhone. The patent describes how visual indicators and touch-sensitive buttons could be incorporated to the space around the iPhone screen.

Rumours that we covered on 3 May 2011, suggest that there may even be two versions of the new iPhone: a 'standard' iPhone 5 and an iPhone 5 'pro'. Apparently, Apple is buying in components of differing quality, and those parts wouldn't be required for a single phone.

A cheaper, smaller iPhone 5 - an iPhone nano

A prototype version of a smaller iPhone is said to exist, built to ward off competition from cheap Android handsets.

Rumours around an iPhone nano picked up again on 13 February when the Wall Street Journal claimed that the so-called 'iPhone nano' exists and may even be on sale later this year.

Those iPhone nano rumours may hold little truth, though. As we reported on 18 February, the New York Times cites an anonymous source who says there will be no smaller iPhone from Apple. "The size of the device would not vary," says the source.

A white iPhone 5

The Economic Daily News is reporting that white iPhone 5 glass is being shipped, with a supplier called Wintek being the sole touch panel vendor for the white iPhone.

It's fairly likely - given that the iPad 2 supports Full HD - that the new iPhone will do the same.

According to the Chinese Economic Daily News (via AppleInsider), with the exception of Qualcomm chipsets - which would replace the current Infineon chipsets in the iPhone 4 - Apple's sticking with the same suppliers for the 2011 iPhone 5G components.

We'd expect the basics of the iPhone 5 specs to get a bump - more memory, faster processor, and more storage. The A5 dual-core ARM processor from the iPad 2 is extremely likely to be included.

The specs? A new antenna, 1.2GHz processor (possibly dual-core) and a larger screen: 3.7" instead of 3.5". The iPhone 5 may also be made from a new kind of alloy, or maybe meat.

In other rumours which surfaced on 15 February 2011, Digitimes is reporting on information supposedly leaked from component suppliers that claim the iPhone 5 will feature a larger, 4-inch screen. Digitimes quotes the source as saying that Apple is expanding the screen size "to support the tablet PC market as the vendor only has a 9.7-inch iPad in the market."

On 23 May, we reported on rumours that the iPhone 5 could feature a curved glass screen. These rumours also came from Digitimes, which said that Apple has purchased between 200 and 300 special glass cutting machines because they're too costly for the manufacturers to invest in.

The iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S will also get a massive graphical boost as it moves to a dual-core GPU - this could herald true 1080p output from the new device, according to our news story on 18 January.

There's been some speculation that Apple might include Near Field Communication (NFC) technology in the iPhone 5G, turning it into a kind of credit/debit card. However, as Techeye.net notes, "Apple has looked into NFC before" so this might not be imminent.

However, with the tech being inside the Google Nexus S, the time for NFC may finally be here.

UPDATE: On 24 February 2011, we reported that an Apple patent has revealed an e-wallet icon on the iPhone homescreen. This adds credence to the rumour that iPhone 5 will feature NFC.

However, on 14 March 2011, reports in The Independent cited sources from 'several of the largest mobile operators in the UK', who said that Apple told them not to expect NFC in the iPhone 5. So perhaps we'll have to wait for iPhone 6 for that.

But who to believe? On 22 March 2011 China Times reported that the new iPhone will include an NFC chip.

LTE support

At least one analyst thinks the iPhone 5 will support LTE, super-fast mobile broadband, in the US. That would make the iPhone 5G a 4G phone, which won't be confusing at all. LTE is certainly coming - AT&T plans to roll out its LTE service in 2011 - but an LTE iPhone has been rumoured for a while. USA Today floated the idea of an LTE iPhone on Verizon last year.

Speaking at a live Wall Street Journal event, Sony's Sir Howard Stringer was talking about the company's camera image sensor facility in Sendai, a town that was recently ravaged by the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

According to 9to5Mac, he said something along the lines of, "Our best sensor technology is built in one of the [tsunami] affected factories. Those go to Apple for their iPhones. or iPads. Isn't that something? They buy our best sensors from us."

Other sources have also said that the new iPhone could have an 8MP camera.

If the iPhone 5 is an evolutionary step like the move from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS then we'd expect the price to stay more or less the same, although in the UK higher VAT rates may well mean a higher price tag.

Quick Recovery - After An Injury, Treat It Fast And Cold - Other

We all have heard the age old treatment for a sprain: put some ice on it. There is little doubt about the ability for cold temperatures compressed on an injury to reduce inflammation and swelling and to ease pain. The most common use of this method in sports medicine is in the acronym R.I.C.E., which stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Go to any trainer after an injury and in one form or another they will mention all of these practices for treatment of the majority of sports injuries.

But at this point in treating an injury the damage is usually already done. Most athletes will overlook minor aches and sprains until they become very painful or reduce range of motion. Once the injury is looked at by a medical professional it is likely that they had not been properly treated since being injured. This can cause more inflammation (and pain). If an athlete begins treating their own injury as soon as they are injured it can reduce recovery time and avoid excessive swelling.

When a muscle, tendon, or ligament is, torn-which is what happens in most sports injuries-blood cells and fluid escape into muscle fibers and cause bruising and swelling visible on the skin. Applying cold to the location of an injury significantly slows this process and reduces damage to tissue associated with excessive swelling. Even more helpful is if cold is applied as soon as an injury is sustained. The less time an injury has to swell the better.

One need only look no further than professional sports to find examples of cryotherapy (the use of cold therapy to treat injuries) in use. For instance, in nearly every professional soccer league there are probably more ankle injuries than in any other sport, and rushing to the aid of every fallen soccer player is a team of trainers armed with cold spray. Skin refrigerants are a fast way to start cryotherapy. Drenching an injury in ice cold water also can have the same affect. The intent is not heal the injury but to simply slow the swelling process.

The most high profile instance of cryotherapy and quick injury intervention in recent memory was that of the Buffalo Bills' Kevin Everett. Everett sustained a spinal cord injury during a game in 2007. Instantly after the impact Everett's body was completely motionless. For the National Football League it is the worst-case-scenario with more than a serious chance for Everett to end up paralyzed. Luckily for Everett one of the team doctors, Dr. Andrew Cappuccino, was a believer of the benefits of cryotherapy and was on scene when Everett sustained his injury and started cold therapy as soon as the ambulance drive to the hospital. Dr. Cappuccino said of cold therapy, in regards to treating Everett's injuries, "cold therapy is responsible for Everett's ability to move his arms and legs days later."

Kevin Everett went from near-total paralysis to gradual movement in days, and his doctors strongly believe that stopping the swelling in his vertebrae before it started played a big role. The doctors also stressed that it is uncommon for most patients to get treatment like Everett did so soon after an injury. Since most don't have a team of doctors standing by during their rec-league flag football games, it is up to each athlete to start their own treatment as soon as they sustain an injury.

Every moment is crucial the first step to getting back to competing is acting quickly. All of the greatest athletes hate injuries mostly because they keep them from doing what they love-playing the game.

January 13, 2010Near the end of our Name the Genre Contest, after arguments among the posters and some truly awful attempts at naming the genre that ended up being the one you're looking at, we got one from Skip vonKuske, cellist with Vagabond Opera, Portland Cello Project, cellotronik and contributor to numerous other recordings and ensembles.

He nailed it and won a night in an oceanview suite and dinner at Chinook Winds Casino Resort. Read why we chose his genre name here.

A few days before he was to fly out to New York to play gigs with Vagabond Opera, I caught up with him at his weekly solo gig at McMenamin's Edgefield. He had just finished a spirited set, electronically layering licks and modes upon each other in all kinds of tunes, including Take Five, of all things.

It's funny that I came up with that but I liked Global Stew better. The definition I gave to Melting Pot was global stew.

I read the blog and I decided to let other people respond and towards the end...I've always felt compelled to make the argument about when people use World Music, the term. I don't know why but I think of Island and Latin and African music and Fela versus Eastern European.

When I came up with the term, as I put in my post, you really have to generalize for a genre. Anybody who falls into that genre may fall into that genre but they would never consider themselves strictly...I guess Blues bands are Blues bands and Jazz combos are Jazz combos but there are so many different types of Jazz.

It does seem to be part of the zeitgeist. Music is music.

KT will hold a 51 percent stake and Softbank will own the remainder in the joint venture, which will be set up by September, they said in a joint press release.

The two telecom companies will open a data center in Gimhae City, near South Korea's second-largest city, Busan, located close to Japan, to offer services to Japanese companies seeking a reliable data storage center.

KT, which has been stepping up its businesses outside the telecom service sector, plans to offer cloud computing services for corporate customers and consumers in Japan, which is battling power shortages caused by a March earthquake.

As a result of natural disasters in Japan and the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant, Japanese companies will have to cut back their electricity use by 15 percent starting in July as part of the country's efforts to curve power demand, which will make it harder for those companies to operate their own data centers.

Through the joint venture in South Korea, Softbank aims to secure a stable data network center to store the companies' data safely during natural disasters and power outages.

"Through the project, we will be able to protect critical corporate systems and data from natural disasters like earthquakes," Masayoshi Son, Softbank's chairman, said in the statement.

SEOUL, July 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean banks' deposits increased 3.2 percent in the first half as the economic recovery and higher deposit rates lured customers into relatively safe assets, industry data showed Tuesday.

Deposits held by local six banks including top lender Kookmin Bank amounted to 810.5 trillion won (US$761 billion) as of end-June, up 24.8 trillion won from the end of last year, according to the data.

Five major banks saw their deposits rise in the first half, but deposits at Korea Exchange Bank (KEB), controlled by U.S. buyout fund Lone Star Funds, declined in the cited period, spawning market concerns that its capacity to do business may be dented.

Deposits at KEB, South Korea's No. 5 lender, reached 67.5 trillion won as of the end of last month, down 1.8 trillion won from six months earlier. Compared with a year ago, its deposits fell by 1.97 trillion won, data showed.

The data came as the protracted sale of KEB and Lone Star's receipt of a record interim dividend are raising uncertainty surrounding the bank's business.

Hana Financial Group Inc. agreed on Friday to extend a deal to buy KEB within six months at a lower price of 4.41 trillion won amid the regulator's delay in its review of Lone Star's eligibility as the top shareholder of KEB.

KEB's decision to pay out a quarterly dividend caused Lone Star to rake in dividends worth 496.9 billion won. The decision invited public criticism that the fund is trying to exit the Korean market after fattening its pockets.

But an official at KEB said that the decline in deposits mainly resulted from seasonal factors, not from a customer exodus, adding that given the size of its assets, the volume of deposits and loans remained at an appropriate level.

KEB's total assets stood at 106.2 trillion won at the end of March, up 6.8 percent from three months earlier. KEB's market share in foreign exchange markets accounted for 47.5 percent as of end-May, up from 43.5 percent the previous month.

That's where a new website, "Literally Unbelievable" stepped in to help sort the out the Wizards from the Muggles, so to speak, and bring the truth to the fore. Hudson Hongo, a 24-year-old writer, started the site May 20 specifically to showcase "stories from The Onion as interpreted by Facebook." The impetus was an Onion story about Planned Parenthood opening an "abortionplex," which engendered heated and unprintable responses on Facebook, as did the Potter send-up."I found the sheer number of people reading Onion articles sincerely (across the political spectrum) a surprise," he told Mashable recently. "I wasn't sure whether it was crueler to share these remarkable texts publicly or to keep them to myself. Then I got bored and just did it."Some Potter fans were certainly taken in by The Onion report shared on Facebook."In response to The Onion story about the Harry Potter movie, for instance, one woman posted, 'it sounds legitit came straight from warner brosclick on the link and watch the video it tells you how they'll do it.' " Mashable noted.Being in the real news biz, we appreciate The Onion for what it does to provide some levity, if not truth. And we only wish this part of its Harry Potter report were true:"Producers of the new Cameron Diaz film, 'Bad Teacher,' have decided to split that movie into zero parts and never release it."
